Following this morning’s meditation with Gen Delek, we had the wonderful opportunity to receive the Blessing Empowerment of Buddha Manjushri. Gen-la began by explaining what it means to receive a Blessing Empowerment and especially receive this Manjushri empowerment. He introduced us to Buddha Manjushri; the wisdom Buddha.

He then clarified the difference between wisdom and intelligence as you can hear in the excerpt below.

Next, he explained all the steps for receiving this empowerment including the importance of doing this with a pure bodhichitta motivation, our wish to attain enlightenment to then be able to benefit all living beings. When explaining the meaning of the Bodhisattva Vow, Gen-la helped us understand how ‘rejoicing in the virtues of others is the best way, the easiest way to engage in virtue’ and how engaging in the Bodhisattva’s way of life – through the practice of the 6 perfections – is the pathway to enlightenment. By taking this vow, we made the promise; we are taking responsibility, taking it upon ourself, to help lead all living beings to that state.

Then in the afternoon teaching, he explained the sadhana – method for attaining accomplishments – ‘Treasury of Wisdom’ which includes the beautiful practice of the four immeasurables. Read on to learn what Gen-la had to say about how equanimity could solve most of the world’s problems.

‘We are wishing that all living beings attain this mind of equanimity. How wonderful, wouldn’t that be amazing? Wouldn’t that be wonderful, if everybody could have this mind of equanimity; a balanced mind. If we think about it, it would be utterly wonderful, wouldn’t it, utterly amazing. Wherever you go, whoever you meet, that person has no strong attachment. That person has no strong anger. That person has a balanced mind. You know? You also have a balanced mind because you’re practicing equanimity, but so does everyone else. It seems like, to me, that even just this is enough to solve most of the world’s problems; just everyone having a balanced feeling towards everyone else; a warm, friendly feeling towards everyone else.’

What is wisdom? How does worldly intelligence deceive us and create problems?

Inspiration

Buddha Manjushri Empowerment was the first one I received few years ago! I have been incredibly marked by these teachings on wisdom and the 4 immeasurables. It gave a whole new perspective to my human life. Since then, I have always been accompanied by the mantra of the Wisdom Buddha.
